February 28, 2013- With a host committee made up of  Texas Representative Alma Allen and Houston City Council Members Ed Gonzalez, Jack Christie, and Stephen C. Costello, the Houston Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (HAND) hosted its spring legislative event, moderated by local celebrity Minerva Perez. Partnering organizations included Healthy Living Matters, Go Healthy Houston Task Force, Kinder Institute, and CAN DO Houston. Healthy Living Matters’ Executive Committee Chair, Dr. Ann Smith Barnes, gave a compelling presentation as she asked the audience to close their eyes and imagine a world where all children were given the opportunity to live full, healthy lives. This world, Dr. Barnes said, could be possible if communities are empowered to advocate for policy change. Presenters from each of the partnering organizations (pictured above) then participated in a panel discussion, answering questions from the audience.
